I found this lantern and junction while randomly searching villages around the UK. What lantern is it aswell? I'm pretty sure its a GEC of some sort.

It is a GEC although I can't recall the exact model number. There is an identical lantern mounted on a house near me.

The same lanterns from the seventies still exist on a street in Cleator Moor, Cumbria, which has missed the mass conversion to LED in the last decade, and still mostly has seventies street lighting.

Not SOX, but a lovely old column with a newly crafted, curved bracket which seems to have been added after the old one seemingly fell off in 2015. Many councils would have ripped the whole thing out and replaced it with a bland new column and post top lantern...

The new bracket looks better than the original one. If you hadn't have told me I would assume it was original to the column.

This is the A21 so is the responsibility of National Highways and not a local council so is even more amazing.

This is the A21 so is the responsibility of National Highways and not a local council so is even more amazing.

The lighting wouldn't be NH's responsibility though would it? It doesn't look like the road is street lit in the official sense so it could even be a footway light under the responsibility of the district or parish council

Still amazing that this is a trunk road though!

I passed by this column last Friday evening and, very sadly, it has now gone to be replaced by anonymous black column of a similar height with a standard post top LED. All that effort (and money) to replace the bracket wasted and its now been replaced.

It looks like it's just off the boundary, which might explain why it survived for so long. For some reason random lamp columns were sometimes positioned outside of the highway boundaries and thus would remain when the others were replaced. Usually they would be replaced a few months later but sometimes they just got forgotten.

There were plans IIRC to replace them with LED like the ones further south.

Still, might as well enjoy them while they last...

Speaking of old columns, Northern Ireland used to have loads of these with the curved brackets - suspect they must date back to the 1970's or early 1980's? Many of the curved brackets were replaced with post top lanterns about 20 years ago (but retaining the original columns) but for some reason, these ones were retained. Originally, they were fitted with Alpha 3's before being replaced with Alpha 8's.

These columns and in particular, those which have retained the curved brackets, are now a dying breed in Northern Ireland. These ones are for the chop next month.

Any surviving Revo Hyperion As?

Wolverhampton Council, which administers the area that had one example which has since been removed last year, said they could not set aside one because they did not have timetable for when any particular column were to be replaced. Obviously it would have be costly to zig-zag between London and Wolverhampton by rail, and I cannot drive because of health issues which I cannot go into detail because of the Mental Health Policy on SABRE.

I'm pretty sure all of Wolverhampton's Hyperions are now consigned to the dustbin unless there's some tucked away somewhere which the council aren't aware of. Some large SOX lanterns survived on Prestwood Road until recently but they have now all gone.

At this time, I do not mind about the location of any surviving REVO Hyperions still in service. My experience with Wolverhampton Council was an example of how challenging it is to acquire them.
