It is a GEC although I can't recall the exact model number. There is an identical lantern mounted on a house near me.UKboy wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 14:17I found this lantern and junction while randomly searching villages around the UK. What lantern is it aswell? I'm pretty sure its a GEC of some sort.Chris5156 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 12:22It almost certainly is.UKboy wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 12:18Not sure if this is SOX or not, but I found this https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.28140 ... 384!8i8192
Also... what a weird junction layout!

The exact model is a GEC Z9539. http://www.simoncornwell.com/lighting/c ... /index.htm
Re: SOX street lights, which areas still have them?
The same lanterns from the seventies still exist on a street in Cleator Moor, Cumbria, which has missed the mass conversion to LED in the last decade, and still mostly has seventies street lighting.

I was delighted to see this little post top lantern still holding on in St Helens, amongst a sea of LED lighting. It can be seen here on GSV.

Saw this on a link posted on another thread:

Not SOX, but a lovely old column with a newly crafted, curved bracket which seems to have been added after the old one seemingly fell off in 2015. Many councils would have ripped the whole thing out and replaced it with a bland new column and post top lantern...

The new bracket looks better than the original one. If you hadn't have told me I would assume it was original to the column.

This is the A21 so is the responsibility of National Highways and not a local council so is even more amazing.Jonathan24 wrote: ↑Mon May 08, 2023 14:24 Saw this on a link posted on another thread:

The lighting wouldn't be NH's responsibility though would it? It doesn't look like the road is street lit in the official sense so it could even be a footway light under the responsibility of the district or parish councilBrenley Corner wrote: ↑Mon May 08, 2023 16:06This is the A21 so is the responsibility of National Highways and not a local council so is even more amazing.Jonathan24 wrote: ↑Mon May 08, 2023 14:24 Saw this on a link posted on another thread:

Still amazing that this is a trunk road though!

Re: SOX street lights, which areas still have them?
I passed by this column last Friday evening and, very sadly, it has now gone to be replaced by anonymous black column of a similar height with a standard post top LED. All that effort (and money) to replace the bracket wasted and its now been replaced.Jonathan24 wrote: ↑Mon May 08, 2023 14:24 Saw this on a link posted on another thread:

Re: SOX street lights, which areas still have them?
It looks like it's just off the boundary, which might explain why it survived for so long. For some reason random lamp columns were sometimes positioned outside of the highway boundaries and thus would remain when the others were replaced. Usually they would be replaced a few months later but sometimes they just got forgotten.Brenley Corner wrote: ↑Tue May 16, 2023 12:36I passed by this column last Friday evening and, very sadly, it has now gone to be replaced by anonymous black column of a similar height with a standard post top LED. Re: SOX street lights, which areas still have them?
In Northern Ireland we still have a good stock of SOX lanterns in 2023 (from FoI request).
Division N S E W Total
# Lights 9668 18492 7822 2501 38483
We're about 2/3 the way through the rollout of LEDs so they'll last maybe another 4 or 5 years.

A1 (M) heading out of London has SOX.
M62 has a bit near Rochdale.
A1 at Borehamwood, anyone know how old these green columns are?

There were plans IIRC to replace them with LED like the ones further south.
Still, might as well enjoy them while they last...

Re: SOX street lights, which areas still have them?
Speaking of old columns, Northern Ireland used to have loads of these with the curved brackets - suspect they must date back to the 1970's or early 1980's? Many of the curved brackets were replaced with post top lanterns about 20 years ago (but retaining the original columns) but for some reason, these ones were retained. Originally, they were fitted with Alpha 3's before being replaced with Alpha 8's.ManomayLR wrote: ↑Tue May 30, 2023 02:09Decently old, and I'm surprised they're still there.scott125 wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2023 20:17 A1 (M) heading out of London has SOX.

These columns and in particular, those which have retained the curved brackets, are now a dying breed in Northern Ireland. These ones are for the chop next month.

Re: SOX street lights, which areas still have them?
Any surviving Revo Hyperion As?
Wolverhampton Council, which administers the area that had one example which has since been removed last year, said they could not set aside one because they did not have timetable for when any particular column were to be replaced. Obviously it would have be costly to zig-zag between London and Wolverhampton by rail, and I cannot drive because of health issues which I cannot go into detail because of the Mental Health Policy on SABRE.

Re: SOX street lights, which areas still have them?
I'm pretty sure all of Wolverhampton's Hyperions are now consigned to the dustbin unless there's some tucked away somewhere which the council aren't aware of. Some large SOX lanterns survived on Prestwood Road until recently but they have now all gone.

At this time, I do not mind about the location of any surviving REVO Hyperions still in service. My experience with Wolverhampton Council was an example of how challenging it is to acquire them.

Those would probably date from the late 70's. Until recently there were quite a few stretches with them in Belfast:Jonathan24 wrote: ↑Tue May 30, 2023 18:42Speaking of old columns, Northern Ireland used to have loads of these with the curved brackets - suspect they must date back to the 1970's or early 1980's? Castlereagh Road https://goo.gl/maps/3EdfBefCeWtoULq3A
Belmont Road https://goo.gl/maps/vqbj9YX5p4FortFs6
Both these would have replaced trolley poles. The Castlereagh ones disappeared about 18 months ago, and replacement columns went up on Belmont a couple of weeks back. There's still a few on Ardenlee Avenue though https://goo.gl/maps/y9xUyntH5MgDj1UC9
Re: SOX street lights, which areas still have them?
Liverpool still has some SOX, mostly MA5Os and don't look too old either.
Re: SOX street lights, which areas still have them?
I spotted these yesterday in South St.David Street, Edinburgh:
