That’s a Norfolk thing. I remember the A10 and A140 have lots of them pointing down side roads too, or they did about 15 years ago. Not sure why.

There are still several thick blue bordered "public telephone" signs in the NW if you know where to look - I imagine the payphone has long since gone though...

Worboys signage in Monkton, Kent, likely dating back to a period of time before the A299 (originally A253) was diverted onto another road further north of the village.

seen a few of these signs before but not the plate underneath.

Before the snowflake symbol was introduced in 1994, the most common way of signing ice hazards, at least in Scotland, was using the slippery road symbol with "road liable to icing" on a blue plate.



That was despite "ice" being a permitted variant of the worded warning sign, their use seemed to be limited to certain areas, or were maybe just older and it was an earlier preference.



There are some examples of like-for-like replacements, which have continued to use the older symbol and text, and some replacements which have updated the symbol, but not the text.

The Z always faced the same way, it simply means "series of bends", whereas the N bend implies a direction - which is not always correct in my experience when used in the post-1975 form for series of bends.

It's trying to tell you there's a roundabout further along but ignoring the mandatory left turn first is a mis-step. However, what is interesting is this is a roundabout usage symbol on a stack type sign which is something I have argued for many times before, so it is great to see one in the wild. From the 70s too!

Oh, I thought there was originally a roundabout at the end of the road which has since been removed. However, I'm not really sure the junction at the end of the road counts as a roundabout given that the priorities are all muddled and it certainly wouldn't be unambiguous to the uninitiated driver following that sign.

It's unusual in that there's no chopsticks on it. Similar signs where motorways change numbers are quite common (or at least, as common as motorways changing numbers) - see here for example. But they generally have the chopsticks symbol - which is arguably incorrect as the motorway regulations don't start there, they just continue, as you're already on a motorway.

They're less common than they used to be, but an RCS can indeed just be a road number to confirm which road you're on. In the pre-Worboys era they were very common, and were sometimes even placed on B-roads.
