Non–Special A roads with N.M.U. prohibitions?

Post by Chris56000 »

Hi!

How many Class A roads are there currently in the whole of the UK that have a N.M.U. (non–motorised–user) prohibition enforced along their length and at junctions that aren't currently covered as a Special Road?

Currently I can think of:

A3 Hindhead Tunnel,
A12 Blackwall Tunnel to Redbridge roundabout,
A14 Huntingdon–Cambridge upgrade
A19 Tees Flyover,
A20 Roundhill Tunnel,
A27 Brighton Bypass (Southease Tunnel)
A63 in Hull,
A102 Blackwall Tunnel South approach,
A299 Chestfield and Ramsgate tunnels,
A505 Baldock Bypass
A666 St Peter's Way in Bolton,
A726 Glasgow South Orbital,
A1203 Limehouse,
A5203 Yeadon Way, Blackpool,
A6144 Carrington Spur
Ex–A601(M) Over Keller Link Road (temporary) until roadworks are completed.

New Scheme to Open with N.M.U. prohibitions:–

A30 Carland Cross – Chiverton Cross

Anyone know of any more?

I've purposely left out the A1/A720 Edinburgh Bypass and Haddington–Dunbar as these are Special Roads, as are the restricted lengths of the A55 in North Wales!

The A27 Brighton Bypass is the Southwick Hill Tunnel, not Southease
The A26 Lewes' Culfail Tunnel
The A3290 In Reading (for the section just after the A3299(M))
The A4142 Around Oxford in parts has a prohibition on cyclists, but not pedestrians or horses.
The A282 at the Dartford Crossing prohibited pedestrians, cyclists & animals. IIRC Pedestrians and cyclists have a place where they can stop and use a phone either side, then a HE vehicle will come along and give them a free ride to the other side, although I doubt many people use this.

I had it in my mind that the West Approach Road in Edinburgh should be on this list, but that's not even numbered. Making it even more of a curiosity?

I do mean to try this some day- it of course replaced the original system of custom double decker buses that were all cycle rack on the lower deck, and had specially built loading docks.

A1203 East India Dock Tunnel, East London

This is not the Limehouse Link, although it leads towards it. The intervening Aspen Way allows NMUs.

A3220 West Cross Route, which includes what is signed as an A40 slip road between the Westway Roundabout from the A219.

A13 Lodge Avenue Flyover prohibits horse-drawn carriages and cyclists. Despite the lack of pavement, It is not signed to prohibit pedestrians.
A4 Hammersmith Flyover prohibits cyclists and pedestrians.

I will point out that the A282 restriction is likely impossible to enforce. You can cycle along the A2 (one of those rare DCs with a hard shoulder) to M25 J2, where you can turn onto the A282 without encountering a no cycling sign. Only when you actually reach the mouth of the tunnel do you encounter pedestrian/cyclist restrictions, and it seems a bit late to turn around then!

You know, if you ever felt like cycling on a bit of road that is effectively the M25, but without a hard shoulder at points...

The A19 both directions between the A174 Parkway and A689 Junctions has a ban on cycles

If so there are no signs to that effect, just no pedestrians signs.

There is a ban on cycles at the Tyne Tunnel however.

I'll vouch for the cyclng ban between the Parkway and Wynyard.

Now, I haven't got off and back on at every junction to check whether they've covered all the on-slips as well, but that looks like a ban to me.

Contrary to general belief, the Rotherhithe Tunnel in London does not ban bicycles, nor pedestrians, and there are steps down right at the tunnel mouth. Every combination of large/heavy vehicles is banned, but not NMUs.

https://www.google.com/maps/@51.5121882 ... 384!8i8192

I have a couple of times encountered a bicycle, and also a pedestrian, when going through. The latter must be almost unable to breathe by the time they come out. There is a decidedly narrow pavement each side and the vehicles are very close, with nowhere to take refuge.

I'll pass, but I though I'd look to see if a similar loophole existed on the Essex side- it doesn't, which means that we can add to the main list:

A13 (between the A1306 and A1012)
A126 (from the junction with the B186 at the main entrance to Lakeside to its end at the A13)

Note: at all points where this restriction starts there are only "no cycling" signs, so if you're on foot, riding your horse or driving a horse and cart, crack on!

The A10 Kingsmead Viaduct has a no pedestrians prohibition, although, again,if you're a cyclist or on a horse, you're fine to continue, which always struck me as a bit odd....

https://www.google.com/maps/@51.80997,- ... 312!8i6656

Once again, the prohibition is just on the structure itself, so you can walk up to the bridge, but then have to turn around and walk back again. If you live for the dangerous things in life, that is.

OK my mistake I looked at the GSV image and it showed only no pedestrians but that had a 2012 date so it must have been put in place after that. I usually drive that section at least once a week but missed seeing it.

I'd say there are going to be plenty of these.

Just off the top of my head:
A50 Meir Tunnel
Sideway Interchange
A53 Flyover

Horses and Horse-drawn carriages were banned from the tunnel in 1952. There is no signage of this today, and I doubt the act (or prohibition) would be hardly enforceable today. Although I do imagine a horse wouldn't enjoy those fumes.

I'm not sure... on the Essex side, there's a cycle path past the no cycling restrictions! Obviously the restriction is intended to apply to the carriageway... and there's no statutory "end" sign.

Does this mean that the "no cycling" is a point restriction intended to prevent access to a stretch of road? If so, what's to stop an intrepid cyclist from legally using the path, then vaulting the armco and carrying on their way...

I have to admit to using a cycle path in such a manner to bypass a line of cones closing the A34 before. The cycle path petered out, so I just hopped onto the slip road, and enjoyed an empty carriageway, before making an exit before the actual works a few miles later...
