It has been oil and gas head offices in Calgary but of late has been some diversification like logistics and robotics which is a good thing.
Stoney has been needed as many of the prinicpal roads in Calgary have been widened where possible but have pinch points like Deerfoot (think from north to south of city) is D4 but has some D2 making rush hour exciting.
Going slightly off topic 16 Ave N is a main road east to west but goes through a major personality change from D3 to a 50mph boulevard (which in my opinion was a mistake with unfinished grade separation) making Stoney like the M25 a better faster option.
Edmonton has a similar ring road called the Henday.
