The A3 at Hindhead (before and after construction). The first picture (taken in 2007) shows the start of the tree clearance for construction of the A3 dual carriageway and tunnel at Hindhead. The second picture (taken in 2022) shows the same view after the A3 and tunnel have been completed.

The A3 upgrade near Grayshott. As part of the Hindhead dualling and tunnel scheme the existing dual carriageway near Grayshott was also upgraded. The first picture shows Portsmouth Road (the A3) in 2007. The second picture shows the same view in 2022, the house that was on the A3 is now behind the fence on a local access road. The third picture (taken in 2022) shows the view towards the same house from the local access road, the A3 is hidden behind the fence (left of picture).

Must have been a bit of a trek to find the A3 construction sites in the woodland.....
I have some end and beginning shots from the 2 opening days, July 27 and 29 2011.
Roads and holidays in the west, before motorways.

Yes it was a bit of a trek from the village to get the before pictures. I made sure that I had a good map that showed me where the A3 was going to go. Fortunately there are a lot of footpaths in the area including one that now goes over the A3 just before the tunnel. I was a bit slow getting the after pictures on this one but better late than never. I believe that the A3 and tunnel opened in 2011 so it's been completed for over 10 years, also it was interesting to see what had happened to the old road that used to run around the Devil's Punch Bowl. If you had never driven along the old road then you would never know that a road had ever existed there.

These 2 pictures show how a house that was set back from the A3 in 2007 is now on the local access road that runs parallel to the upgraded A3. The first picture shows Portsmouth Road (the A3) near Grayshott in 2007. A house is shown in a wooded area. The second picture shows the same house in 2022 (the house is now on the local access road), the upgraded A3 is behind the fence on the right of the picture. All of the trees that can be seen in the before picture (taken in 2007) have been removed to make way for the A3 (dual carriageway) and local access road.

The A3 upgrade near Grayshott. These 2 pictures (taken in 2007 and 2022) are both looking south west near Grayshott. The first picture shows the A3 where it used to go back to a dual carriageway after the single carriageway section through Hindhead. The second picture shows the same view after the A3 upgrade has been completed. The houses (left of picture) that were on the side of the A3 in 2007 are now on the local access road that runs alongside the upgraded A3. The A3 is now hidden behind the fence (right of picture).

Here's a before-and-after of a local road, Rope Lane, which was re-aligned to include a bridge over the new A500 Hough-Shavington-Willaston bypass which opened in 2003.

In August 2001, field fenced off for construction.

In December 2001, making headway

In 2022-ish, similar view from Google Maps*

(* I'm not sure of the protocol of using Google Streeview for the "after" shot - if it's a no-no, let me know and I'll go and take one at the weekend as the building on the right is a school and I don't fancy taking photos there in the week.)

Oh, it only seems to allow me three photos per post.

In March 2022, with the bridge present
view_20020318.jpg
And the bridge itself, built while the original road is still open
view_20020616.jpg
And September 2003, removing the old road, once the bridge was opened, to dig down for the bypass itself

Good pics. I always enjoy before and after photos of almost any change in the landscape, roads especially obviously.

Now they are some good ones. There is something about these high voltage pylons, maybe it's all those years in the Fens seeing them march across what is a quite barren and flat landscape.
