N225/A25/E42 North west France?

Post by Chris56000 »

Anybody know why there's a 6¼ mile/10 km section of expressway/dual carriageway N225 between Junction 57 of the A16 Channel Ports Motorway and the start of the A25 to Lille/Brussels?

Are there any plans to convert the N225 to A25 Autoroute?

Am I correct in saying the E402/E42/E411 will get me from Calais to Metz toll–free?

I would try viamichelin route planner which has tolls within its comparison of costs and the answer is Yes.

The N225 (originally N16) was built before the A25 which gradually worked its way north from Lille and even much further before the A16 crossed it. As a result the motorway connected into the existing expressway, but no plans exist to fill the gap as this would be the responsibility of DIR Nord and they're skint, so any work would be done by a toll company and that would be unpopular.

If you cut across through Belgium and Luxembourg using that route there won't be tolls, but the routes through Belgium can be significantly busier than the péages in France. At least it avoids the R0.

... and time it so that you can fill your tank from fumes to the brim in Luxembourg, where it's significantly cheaper than in neighbouring countries.

As a one off I'd just pay the tolls. The A26 is a contender for the most boring road in the universe but it's quick and doesn't rely on pot luck for Belgian traffic or roadworks. You can stay entirely in France toll free using the A25, A23, and crossing the A2 but would struggle for direct speed beyond having to follow the local roads parallel to the Belgian border.

Oh, yes. Hainault is almost solid road works, as the old industrial heartland of Belgium it has some of the older motorways and they are heavily used.
