Travelling home from Nottingham yesterday down the M1, and 5 miles south of Junction 15 I spot this.
It seemed to be in such a random spot! I looked back on Google Street View and it was installed at some point between July and December 2021.
There was an RCS after Junction 15 until some point between July 2019 and July 2021. The distances are mostly consistent between the two signs, although Milton Keynes has gained a mile somewhere compared to Luton and London. But any ideas why the sign was moved to where it is? Is it something to do with the roadworks there? Or is the first clue a secret Junction 14A is on the horizon?

Also on the M1 between Js 21 - 20 . Bryn's theory is reinforced by the fact there is also a manky northbound RCS directly opposite the southbound sign.

We could perhaps benefit from similar where long gaps exist.

That's the unique one! The M11 southbound before J10 just says "No exit at J9" which is less useful. I also like how the original sign has been put onto expensive new posts, classic NH that - put a faded and life expired sign on shiny new equipment.

There's also this oddity on the M6 after a service area but again given there's one on the other direction on the same stretch albeit before the services it could just be there due to the long distance between junctions. Every time I go that way I keep half-expecting it to have gone!

Think this was placed here because of the relatively short gap down from J33. There used to be some lovely old RCS surviving north of Preston, this is one of the only ones left now.

The most random ones I've ever come across are on the A27 between Havant and Chichester. There's several of these, one almost every mile. Anyone know the reasoning behind these ones? OK, the gap between junctions is a bit longer than what you'd be used to on the A27, but it's not exactly an eternity between the two.

In 1976 I travelled from Victoria Falls to Beit Bridge through what was then Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). On sections where there were very few towns, there was a RSC every 10 km (or was it 20 km - I don't remember).
I DO remember the drive between West Nicholson and Beit Bridge (about 130 km). The countryside is flat, low-lying and rather arid. The bush war was heating up and there was a a checkpoint at West Nicholson. Two convoys, protected by Rhodesian Army personnel left the checkpopint every day. Out party (two Land Rovers) had missed the second convoy. We were told by the soldiers manning the check point that the official advice was to wait until the next convoy the following morning, but unofficially they had received no notification of any guerilla activity in the region and that they could not stop us if we continued. Our tour leader chose to continue and broke the speed limit for most of the journey. When we were a few kilometres from Beit Bridge I heard whoosh whoosh coming over us which gave me a fright. Looking up, I saw that two Rhodeisan Air Force jets were checking the road before nightfall (it was about an hour before sunset). A few minutes later we crossed the Limpopo Riber at Beit Bridge and entered South Africa.
I can think of a few examples of this happening on minor roads and after non-notable junctions. It makes you wonder why some of them were installed in the first place
