This is a decent idea when you've got room for a verge that's at least a car's length wide (obviously useless for buses and trucks) but pretty useless and increases the chances of pedestrians getting squashed by traffic off the main road, as Bryn says.

Taking crossings off desire lines mean they aren't used. Plus with buildings you lose intervisibility.

Maybe we could just stop designing city centres around cars and start designing for people, like civilised nations are doing.
Trying to improve safety for pedestrians at junctions isn't just a city problem - it applies to most junctions (excluding freeflow roads).
