"STOP" Imprinted onto red lenses in Upper Purton Swing Bridge
(photo taken by TheMidlandsTH)
These lenses in Purton, Gloucestershire on Upper Purton Swing Bridge have the words "STOP" imprinted into them. As far as im aware, this was discontinued after the Hixon disaster. Does this mean the lenses were moved from an older wigwag to a newer one? The amber one (I dont have a photo of - i can slightly see on google maps) doesn't have "STOP" imprinted into them.
Are there any other strange examples of this?

Re: "STOP" Imprinted onto red bulbs in Lower Purton Swing Bridge
I’ve no idea but I’m pretty sure that’s a red lens in front of the bulb, not a bulb with the word STOP moulded into the glass.

Re: "STOP" Imprinted onto red lenses in Lower Purton Swing Bridge
Oh dear. The signing for that bridge needs an overhaul.
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.73707 ... 6656?hl=en
The "Automatic barriers" sign (old Diagram 537.1) became non-prescribed on the 1st of January 1999. The less said about the "No track laying vehicles" sign (Diagram 622.4) the better. The "Large vehicles keep to centre of bridge" sign, do they really have an option (and has the sign ever been authorised)? The "Weak bridge" sign, (Diagram 626.2A), the "T" should be "t" these days and "25" is not a prescribed weight. There doesn't seem to be a Diagram 529 on any of the approaches to the bridge either, not that that is necessarily a problem.
So all in all, someone should replace the signing there. Good thing the roads beyond the bridge don't go anywhere?
The DS leading to the bridge is unusual

Re: "STOP" Imprinted onto red lenses in Lower Purton Swing Bridge
With a little research, looking at the sign and the OS Map it would seem that the bridge and road on the other side are the owned by the Canal and Rivers Trust rather than either National Highways or the local council so a little irregularity is to be expected

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.73561 ... 6656?hl=enWell I'd like to think they've at least updated the old white bordered wig-wags since the Google car went that way in 2014. They have at the bridge I mentioned.

So who owns the signs and wig-wags and is thus responsible for updating them?KeithW wrote: ↑Fri Dec 16, 2022 10:04This is also owned by the Canal and River TrustUnbreakify wrote: ↑Fri Dec 16, 2022 10:02 Wrong bridge matey!

I love the sign that says "large vehicles keep to centre of bridge". I'm not sure how they could do otherwise !

Maybe they want them to stop when they get to the middle of the bridge

Best guess: the trust simply got their contractors to install the amber light on a new backing board and amend the circuitry post-Hixon.Unbreakify wrote: ↑Fri Dec 16, 2022 07:10

Re: "STOP" Imprinted onto red lenses in Lower Purton Swing Bridge
Why would they need to update them? No organisation is obliged to follow signage in a manual which has been produced by a completely unrelated organisation. You see this all the time with signage around supermarkets/shopping areas/industrial estates/service stations and other private roads.Conekicker wrote: ↑Fri Dec 16, 2022 21:34 So who owns the signs and wig-wags and is thus responsible for updating them?

Re: "STOP" Imprinted onto red lenses in Upper Purton Swing Bridge
I can just about remember when all red lights had STOP in black lettering.
That light seems odd because I doubt the word is visible to drivers.

Re: "STOP" Imprinted onto red lenses in Upper Purton Swing Bridge
Its entirely possible they found it kicking around in a yard somewhere. The Canal and River trust is not exactly flush with money, as for the signs on the bridge they probably got fed up with repairing the sides.

Re: "STOP" Imprinted onto red lenses in Upper Purton Swing Bridge
That's an original SGE-type traffic signal lens, which has been pointed out usually had 'STOP' embossed on them. The letters were painted onto the outside of an SGE lens, so they could lose the paint over time, whereas the ATE/Plessey counterparts had it on the inside and were less susceptible to that, though it's also possible in this case that it was intentionally removed in an attempt to bring them somewhat up to date.
I'm pretty sure those wig wags featured in a thread or two on here in the past, I'm surprised they're still going.
IIRC, the introduction of the amber aspect on wig wags and the removal of the 'STOP' lettered lenses happened around the same time, so I wonder if these slipped through with an amber and STOP lenses from new, or if it's more likely the lenses are either from a modification or replacement parts like AndyB has suggested.

Re: "STOP" Imprinted onto red lenses in Upper Purton Swing Bridge
I more often saw (I use "saw" as I cannot be sure I have seen them recently - I am sure that people will correct me if I am wrong) the word STOP in black across the filter etc.
