Abandoned Level Crossings
Im curious about some of the abandoned level crossings around Britain.
Some can be fully removed from history, but still have photo evidence.
Some can some equipment left.
Some can have all their equipment left.
And strangely, some can have their equipment renewed, For example, Moody Ln.
If anyone has photos, information, or anything related to Abandoned Level Crossings, feel free to post it here.
For anyone curious, Moody Ln looks like this:

Re: Abandoned Level Crossings
I know of quite alot of abandoned level crossings, however I don't have photos of them, nor are a lot of them accessible to the public in general.
I guess there are different types of abandoned level crossings too, there are those where the line is closed, there are those where the road is closed, either to all traffic or just motor traffic.
One you can see, although there isn't much left of it, is the old A27 level crossing at Beddingham. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.85626 ... a=!3m1!1e3 I've peeped over the edge of the bridge a few times when cycling along here to take a look. Pretty much just the old surface of the level crossing with the no stopping markings and then the barriers have been replaced with mesh fencing.
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.83580 ... 384!8i8192 This level crossing became pedestrian only in the 80s I think, but then was replaced by a bridge about 7 years ago, but you can clearly see where the crossing was as there is a gate and signage (covered).
I often go to running competitions in military training areas, and quite a few of those have old railway lines with levels crossings which haven't seen trains in decades. Bramley Training area near Basingstoke comes to mind first, also Caerwent in Wales has alot of old railway lines running though it, although most tracks have been lifted there.

This one in Kings Lynn has been in various stages of dismantlement over the years. (The line hasn't been used since 1994.)

Re: Abandoned Level Crossings
Although I think this line & crossing is still "technically" open across the A259 Trunk Road for rail access to Dungeness Power Station, you'd be extremely unlucky to ever find a train here.

Wheelwright Lane, Coventry - unusual in that it lies within a signalised junction.

About the only sign around left that there was ever any railway here, on a branch to Cocklakes Mine off the Settle-Carlisle.

One just outside Penkridge on the line to the closed Littleton Colliery.

Re: Abandoned Level Crossings
What's the story with that one? Looking at the track condition it can't have been disused for very long, and following it on the aerial views it only seems to have got overgrown near the (still intact-looking, complete with lit signal) junction.Bfivethousand wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 15:48 Wheelwright Lane, Coventry - unusual in that it lies within a signalised junction.
Re: Abandoned Level Crossings
A4 Bath Road, near Heathrow?
Track lifted, lights mostly remaining. Looking quite sad for itself.
One in Gosport - not sure if it is still there. Tracks across road, nothing ever running there again

Re: Abandoned Level Crossings
Not too many houses have a railway pointing straight through their gate directly at their house! Nice one.

Re: Abandoned Level Crossings
Yes, like many keepers' cottages, it's obviously been extended across the trackbed. The level crossing even survived the widening of the main road to Ards when you might have thought they would have ripped up the rails at that time.

Opportunity for a late night Sabre trip to see a string of rarely used level crossings in use?!RichardA35 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 19:10Path in for 3/1/2023 https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/servic ... /detailedBrenley Corner wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 15:20 Although I think this line & crossing is still "technically" open across the A259 Trunk Road for rail access to Dungeness Power Station, you'd be extremely unlucky to ever find a train here.
Seems like a convoluted routing, especially heading to Ashford and back twice. What type of train would this be? And what would it carry. Looking at the OS map, it seems the actual railway line stops about 2 miles short of the power station at Dungeness.
