Gibraltar tunnel opening

Post by James »

Its just been announced that the Gibraltar airport tunnel is opening on Friday. This will be great access to the rock as aircraft will no longer cause the only access road to be blocked to vehicles and pedestrians, however the downside is it will be it will no longer be possible to drive across the runway. This has been a very delayed project that has been going on what feels like forever with various delays and legal issues.

In some common sense, its been agreed access will be maintained for pedestrians, cycles, e-scooters, otherwise they faced a lengthy diversion

The official info is here on the new route

I did a quick video today while leaving Gib, and plan to do another after the tunnel opens.

Wow, I'm sure they were planning that when I was working there in 2001! Will be a shame not to be able to cross the runway, though at least it means you won't get a random cyclist chancing it in the path of a 737!

Seems like there's a bit more stacking space for when the Spanish Border control are being awkward, which is a bonus.

Long overdue - I remember being rather uneasy being driven across that runway in 1994 :D

And of course, being Gib it had to be filmed on two wheels! :D

A lot of shiny new D2, and what looks to be a new airport terminal? They've certainly built a lot since my last visit, I don't remember the towers on the left as you exit the tunnel.

Interesting - it’s all on a much bigger and fancier scale than I imagined.

I love Gib. It’s one of my favourite places in the whole world.

Took me a second to realise we weren't discussing these tunnels!
Built for comfort, not speed.

From the SABRE Wiki: Gibraltar Tunnels :

The Gibraltar Tunnels (more commonly referred to as the Monmouth Tunnels) are a pair of bored tunnels carrying the A40 through Gibraltar Hill near Monmouth. They were constructed in the late 1960s as part of the route linking the Midlands to South Wales.

The tunnels were opened as part of the Mitchell Troy and Gibraltar Diversion scheme on 30 June 1967 by Ifor Davies, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Wales (per the Cymru : Wales 1967 Report).
