Thank you for visiting

What is the criterion for adding wording to NSL signs such as this. It's as you leave Hevingham towards Norwich and without wishing to be uncharitable there isn't much there to stop and see

These silly "please drive carefully" phrases and similar are unnecessary distractive nonsense. They do absolutely nothing other than waste material. I'd bet that 95% of drivers going through this village don't even stop.

I think a lot of the time it's because they are mounted back-to-back with the entrance sign that name of the village/town on it, so making the one on the other side the same shape and size hides the back of it. Not that this is an issue because most signs have the back visible anyway and I never understand why they like to use a yellow backing board with an NSL sign.

This is one of the worst backing board offenders I've seen

These are also both completely redundant signs under the speed limit roundels

Some of the West Sussex villages just have a big "Thank you" sign!

It seems a little bit presumptive to assume if you don't drive carefully you don't make it to the other side.

I quite like haste ye back signs. I don't think they are as common as the used to be. If my memory serves me right then Kilsyth changed theirs to "Safe Journey" - maybe "haste" wasn't compatible with road saftey.

I have to smile each time I pass a sign when entering a village stating “Please drive carefully through our village” and it’s been hit by a vehicle. There’s irony for you.

This one has the same effect "We are a neighbourhood watch community" with a bullet hole right through it.

I find the inconsistent capitalisation disturbing.

These are just generic road safety messages and are permitted under the regs. Whether or not they work is a separate question but I don't have an overriding issue with their presence.

These are certainly preferable to nonsense like self-congratulatory "look how amazing we are spending £5000 on this sign rather than maintaining our network" local authority boundary signs any day.

I can confirm that these signs are not of the variable message type. Even if I drive through a village and hit three pedestrians, two cyclists and a pidgeon they still thank me for my considerate driving

This Used to exist on the only road into Bramhope with welcome signs. It has now been replaced, but I fought it was funny only allowing careful drivers.

It's a psychological trick - like posting "Thank you for not smoking" rather than "No smoking". The theory is that if you thank people for doing what they should, then anyone who hasn't done that will feel embarrassed as you're thanking them when they don't deserve it - while if you order them to do something, the natural reaction is to be offended by being bossed about. Whether it works or not is a different matter...

Once you've passed that sign you can drive as recklessly as you want. :D

Like the Lancashire County Council border signs stating "a place where everyone matters" back in 2009!

Legend has it that one such sign had "matters" altered to "natters".
