"Welcome To" Signs with pointless corporate slogans

Post by Brenley Corner »

Having seen the "Thank You For Visiting" thread, I think "Welcome To" signs with pointless 'corporate slogans & designs. are far more of a distraction.

Here is an example from a journey I make periodically; there must be many more examples of this waste of time, money, and materials - as well as being a distraction.

Thanks,
Tony

We have a few of them too, this one amuses me saying hello to Redcar.

Which must confuse a few people as when a few hundred metres on when you hit a roundabout the signage doesnt mention Redcar at all !

Those who have been around for a while will remember the fashion for Labour-controlled councils to put up supplementary plates under their entry signage with "A Nuclear-free Town/Borough" etc.

Newham council did so, quite ignoring that the periodic nuclear waste trains from Sizewell power station in Suffolk to Sellafield would lay over to change crews etc at the Stratford railway yard in the borough.

They should have stuck with Langbaurgh as the name of the borough.

Re your first link, that is from the bridge over the railway - but aren't such bridges supposed to have solid parapets? This one doesn't.

As well as some incorrect Irish. Correct translations would be Cathair na Ríthe, as well as Lár an Chaisil (but in reality it should only read "Caiseal/TOWN CENTRE").

The use of Transport Medium on the brown sign is bizarre too.

I saw one of those on leaving Whitby on the A171 today, which gave me a slight chuckle, more so as it was absolutely chucking it down. There is also one as you leave Staithes on the A174, shortly after which, you get to appreciate the "beauty" of the Boulby postash mine :D

(In defence of R&C, I've just spent a lovely weekend with a load of people in a place just outside Brotton. There's some quite pleasant places hidden away if you know where to find them.)

Whereas this sign in Barrow says very much the opposite! I also like the incongruity between the BAE Systems logo and the 'Fairtrade Town' plate.

The first village you reach on A174 after leaving Staithes heading west is Easington (not the former mining village). I used to live there prior to moving to Birmingham. Our house was the first non-farm building on the left, painted white and with the address "The White House" which sounded grander than it really was, and in times past it had been the village pub, so some people still called it the "Old Tiger", the modern Tiger pub being at the other end of the village now. Tiger is a pretty unusual name for a pub and I don't know the background behind it, but does anyone know of any other pubs of that name? It was a Bass pub, having been taken over from the Hope & Anchor brewery of Sheffield, these days it will belong to one of the big pubcos.

There's a tourist sign coming into Cashel that has "Caiseal na Rí" https://www.google.com/maps/@52.5264649 ... ?entry=ttu I wonder if it was just taken from this?

There is quite a good farm shop there as I recall. There was a pub called The Tiger in Normanby but it was renamed as The Lambton for some reason.

There's a lot of these signs on entering Ashfield. Lots of different images and slogans. "Innovation and Endeavour". The only thing I endeavour to do is to leave as soon as possible

Something that seems to have come into fashion again (after seeing the new Welsh 20 signs) is the habit of sticking some kid's scribbling of a car/snail/kids crossing a road on signs. They just look untidy IMHO.

Yuck, those are all ghastly. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough but Leicestershire doesn't seem to be inflicted with this issue, I stand to be corrected.

In fact, the only thing that comes to mind is one that is actually tasteful: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.67141 ... ?entry=ttu

I'm not a fan of the shade of pink they use either.

Are you sure it's not simply a rather faded red?

Looking back at the historic streetview it was a rather vivid pink in ‘09.

South Lanarkshire normally welcomes visitors like this on route 74, however on the B764 between Eaglesham and Jackton they changed the road safety message, which had been there a a few years , into something a wee bit different.
