A five-mile road closure on a major road in mid Wales has forced motorists to take a two-hour detour.
Part of the A470 was shut after a wall separating the road fell into a river.
The road has been closed immediately north-west of Talerddig, between Carno and Dolfach in Powys and will remain shut until further notice.
Traffic Wales said: "We appreciate that the diversion is lengthy but the route needs to be of the same class of road that's closed."
The journey from Carno to Dolfach should only take eight minutes by car, but is likely to take at least two hours following the diversions suggested by Traffic Wales.
This is causing some serious issues, as the section of A470 in question is one of those lovely* bits of Welsh trunk road with no local diversion. There are a few local B or unclassifed roads however these are narrow and unsuitable for the volume of traffic that will now be trying to use them, and as for trunk roads options you're looking at the A458 or A44 (the A44 route being the official diversion), which as the article mentions is a fair old trek around.
As for the collapse itself, I understand it to be in this area, where there have been TTLs for a number of months. Hopefully this repair doesn't take as long as the section west of Llanbrynmair where it took the Trunk Roads Agency the better part of a decade to fix some rockfall issues!

I use this route every week or so. The TTLs have been in place for a long time, perhaps two years (not shown on July 2021 GSV) . One lane closed although the landslip did not appear obvious. It's unfortunate that remedial work to fix it hasn't been undertaken earlier, as a relatively small repair and drainage work could perhaps have avoided what could well be a major rebuilding project. It's unfortunate too that the closure will put more traffic onto the parallel A458. The 25 miles between Welshpool and Mallwyd is rather a slog at the best of times!

The A470 is one of those roads where it isn't acceptable to say "do nothing", it needs to be a modern road exactly because if it closes for any reason it screws everywhere. Obviously landslips etc will always be a problem but modern alignments shouldn't be as high risk if designed properly in the first place.
Bryn Terminally cynical, unimpressed, and nearly Middle Age already. She said life was like a motorway; dull, grey, and long.
While not great, at least there's now some kind of route open.

This is true, however nobody has told NWTRA this...

Ah yes, the same route that's had a "temporary" 40mph limit over about 4 miles for the past decade or more. I assume its because of issues around barriers, however its absolutely ridiculous how long its just been left.
