Single entry–only sllp, Junction 45, A16, Calais, France?

Does anyone know why a seemingly superfluous entry sliproad from "Rondpoint De La Nouvelle" on the D119 to the southwest–bound A16 near Calais, France, was built?

It seems to me to be totally unnecessary as Junction 46 a mile further north east provides full access to and from the D119 and the D943 at a roundabout interchange, and all the local streets, etc., on the other side of the river are served by the McDonald's exit at Junction 44 (a full diamond interchange) a mile southwest of this sliproad !

I did note, tho', that the start of this superfluous sliproad has a large convenient (unsigned!) parking space and there's also no French chopsticks anywhere along it until you're on the A16 itself!

Interesting spot! From the aerial view, it looks very much like a remnant of an older alignment -- either an access route from the A16 to the port (via D119, pre-dating the N216), or the original alignment of the A16 itself.

Although, if the D119 *was* the main route to the port at one point, I do wonder how that weird dogleg over the river a little further north coped with all the traffic!

Fairly sure when the original Calais Bypass (opened as N1) was built, this was the eastern terminus. You could once upon a time make out the old S2+1 markings.

Going back to 2008 GSV at the roundabout you can make out old lane markings for traffic entering the roundabout

It was the link from the ferry/hoverport to the southbound A16 before the N216/A216 was built. The D219 was actually dualled for part of its length until the N216/A216 was completed.

On the A16 immediately to the west of where the slip road merges the original and second carriageway bridges are easily distinguishable by looking at the style of guard rails.
