It's kind of similiar to where the LTC will meet the M25, with one five-lane carriageway in one direction and two carriageways in the other.

General arrangement (large file): https://infrastructure.planninginspecto ... _clean.pdf

Or for a more compact version, the M8 Kingston Bridge.

They did it that way to avoid needing to replace the bridge. The real problem is that there's 7 lanes squeezing into 3, occasionally 4 when the hard shoulder is open.

The queues there in a morning are hideous.

The right-hand carriageway here comes from the M6J4a, the left-hand carriageway from the M42/M6T- they don't merge until a few hundred meters further on. This arrangement stops traffic leaving the M6 at J4a, heading south on the M42 and then turning back onto the M6 at J3a.

Prior to the M6T being constructed, the left carriageway here was the M42 northbound.
Let it snow.

Surely those are southbound carriageways?

Both of these statements are correct.

I used to do it on a Friday afternoon from Leeds, reached there around 4pm, really scary bit of road for a new driver. People don't keep a constant speed in queues either - it's gogogogogoSTOP, rinse and repeat - something you learn the first time you find yourself at that point in the traffic wave where you are basically making an emergency stop.

Birmingham motorways teach one motorway hazard perception in no time at all.
