I noticed this on the A282 recently as it turns back into the M25. The first variable speed limit gantry is in the 60 mph speed limit and the NSL (either from the NSL signs or the M25 sign) starts about 100m further back. Does this mean that the gantry can't show speed limits lower than 60 mph, as the NSL cancels this limit straight after? Are there any other examples like this?

No Reason that the gantry can't show speeds below 60, would be weird to go 60->50->NSL quickly, but not wrong.

There are similar situations on the new A1 & A14 at Huntingdon were NSL repeaters are present at some locations with street lighting, however the gantries can show any speed limit.
Its almost like if a road is able to have VSL, maybe it should be required to be a motorway so stupid things like this do not happen.

Often at road works, the speed limits can be odd too. On the M25 the otherday at the A3 works. There was congestion so on the exit of the road works the VLS was 40, but the signed works limits went from 50->nsl.

Also often at the exit of a slip road off a smart motorway there will still be a VSL AMI above the exit slip lane (especially on older SM designs), only for an End of VSL/NSL sign to appear shortly after.

Surely,the soultion is to have a Variable speed limit sign with the chopsticks and that gantry display NSL when no lower limit is set

Why are there even NSL and clearway end signs there in the first place? Even without them the chopsticks signs in theory cancel the VSL and this "M25 only" plate means the first gantry isn't even part of the VSL section.

As has been mentioned, the A14 proves that HE believe VSL signs override anything else.

Is the A14 showing mandatory speed limits? I've not passed through much when gantries were active but in the early days they were only showing advisories, similar to the M25 northern sections after widening.
