There was also the policy to make Leeds the Motorway City of the 70's which now looks very sad indeed.

Walking on motorways and new strategic routes under construction was something of a fad, they did the same with the A66/A19 through Middlesbrough and Billingham before it officially opened, the modern Health and Safety Executive would have a hissy fit just thinking about it. No hard hats, high vis vests or access control and school parties being shown around while building was in process !

Plenty of organised walks still happen on new roads before they open, most recently the A14 had a big one.

When the A5 Tamworth bypass, officially the A5 Trunk Road (Fazeley Two Gates Wilnecote Bypass), was being built many people including ourselves walked along it at weekends to see how it was progressing - I'm sure plenty of unofficial walks occur elsewhere.

Indeed but those were not exactly organised - it was pretty much a free for all, they only clamped down when one deluded soul jumped off the Leven Valley viaduct and got his 5 minutes of fame.

nirs put on his site the 1994 walk across the M3 Belfast harbour bridge before it opened

(Images 2 and 3 on his page http://www.wesleyjohnston.com/roads/m3.html )

That whole area is being built up now with tower blocks for offices, apartments and student accomodation. Back then it was a working dock - seacat to Troon on one side, coal yard on the other.

More recent though doubtless smaller, the new viaduct at Machynlleth.
