New Motorway M12, Sydney, AU.

Post by Peter Freeman »

A new 16km freeway is being constructed to connect Sydney's 2nd international airport (at Badgerys Creek) into the city's motorway network. It will be numbered M12, and will branch westwards off M7, the most westerly part of Sydney's orbital. It will initially terminate just west of the airport turnoff, on the major N-S arterial road A9. However, there are future plans, not well-defined yet, for it to continue westwards and then possibly southwards. It will not be tolled.

Construction has begun, and completion will be synchronised with the commissioning of the new airport (and a heavy rail link to the city) in 2026.

The construction of the most easterly part, which includes a directional-T interchange with the N-S M7, is being managed by Transurban. This facilitates integration with the D2M-to-D3M widening of a considerable length of M7. That project has begun.

I think that local connectivity with the motorway could've been improved during the planning phase, otherwise it looks good and fit for serving the new airport.

The western end of M12 is a basic, but adequate, temporary arrangement, pending its extension westwards past the A9.

The local connection at the eastern end, to Elizabeth Drive and Wallgrove Road, is mainly to provide alternative, un-tolled access to the M12 freeway, independent of the M7 tollway.

The design allows for a future interchange with Mamre Road and Devonshire Road, local roads about halfway to the airport turn-off.

The M12 initially is merely a short spur off the Sydney Orbital, passing through low population. See the solid green line on the 'NSW Motorways' post of 27-04-2019, on this page - viewtopic.php?t=33789&start=20
