A3055 could be split into three (Military Road erosion)

Post by jervi »

On the Isle of Wight the A3055 was split at Undercliff near Niton around a decade ago following landslips and subsidence, which has left the A3055 currently split in two.
However recently there has been concern about the road near to Compton Farm which is likely to be closed between 2 years and 10 years time due to its very close proximity to the chalk cliff which is eroding.

Options are being looked at, apparently either diverting the road inland, which is the most expensive option, or the other option is to improve the existing roads further inland to support the displaced traffic for when the road does succumb to it's fate.
We all know its going to be the latter thou.

Interesting. Here's the problem area on GSV. https://www.google.com/maps/@50.6672344 ... ?entry=ttu

It looks like it would only take one good storm to take the cliff away and sever the road link, which will create a long cul-de-sac on each side, and the scenic and popular 'Military Road' through route will be no more

It's currently in 3 pieces as Leeson road in Bonchurch is closed since the landslip in december, although it was unaffected, it did get close to it, only the smugglers haven cafe and two properties separate the road from the slip.

Will be a great loss if the Military Road is severed as tourists and locals rely on it as the alternatives are narrow S2 or S1 routes to get to the Middle Road. The road at Compton has already had pile retaining walls piled in, in order to prolong it. There is room at Brook to route the road inland by a few metres therefore straightening it a bit.

Undercliff Drive: since the slips happened in 2014, the area between Niton and the western end of the slip has become eerily quiet and in places derelict. The eastern end has better connections and seems alot less abandoned.Surely it would make sense to reroute the A3055 number to Whitwell Road and Gills cliff Road and upgrade it to A road standard

Could not believe when I drove it that there are no barriers on the cliff side of the road and its a 60mph limit.

Couldn't the authorities build a new road a few hundred metres away from Military Road? It seems feasible to me.

The A39 at Countisbury with a gradient of 25% says hello.
