Surprised this hasn’t been discussed here -

Obviously a tragic event but what is strange is that the fire started hours after the accident - and one of the reasons the motorway remains closed is the damage to the gantry.
M27 remains closed 24 hours after accident

Re: M27 remains closed 24 hours after accident
The quote from Highways on the BBC article was that the gantry spans “several lanes”, but is that true? Is it no longer safe to run with two lanes coned off?

The damage is to a VMS gantry not a full gantry, see images here:

Apparently it's being removed overnight...

Re: M27 remains closed 24 hours after accident
It's not entirely clear to me why the closure needed to be all the way between J9 (Fareham West/Segensworth) and J5 (Eastleigh?). If the accident was close to Southampton airport as originally suggested than the logical diversions westbound are J8 for the A3024 towards Southampton and onwards journeys on the M27 rejoining at J3 via the M271 and for the M3 J7 to take the A27 to the reach the start of the M3. Those were certainly the routes we took in the late 70s earl 80s before the section between junctions 7-4 was completed?
Re: M27 remains closed 24 hours after accident
According to the National Highways website yesterday, it was closed from J9 as they could not close it at J7 or J8 as the traffic management required for a closure was not compatible with the current traffic management for the bridge repair works between J7 and J8.Fluid Dynamics wrote: ↑Fri Feb 23, 2024 12:05 It's not entirely clear to me why the closure needed to be all the way between J9 (Fareham West/Segensworth) and J5 (Eastleigh?). Thanks, that makes sense, but would have had a significant impact on local roads.
