When was the A12 dualled between Gallows Corner and the M25?

When was the A12 dualled between Gallows Corner and the M25?
I've seen an old photograph today which shows it as a dual carriageway at Gubbins Lane/Gooshays Drive in 1979 but read elsewhere the 2 mile section between Gallows Corner and what would become the M25 was not dualled until 1982

I wonder if there's anything in the resources we have available on SABRE, like, say, the SABRE Wiki about this?
If only there was an article about the A12, and maybe even a specific one about its history that might answer questions like this.

I have the 1978 OS 1:50,000 (major roads revised 1977) which shows it undualled. A Hamlyn road atlas also dated 1977 has the same.

What an interesting photo. The roundabout is now a lot wider with more traffic lanes and has lost its 50p shape which was typical of roundabouts from the era. One thing has always surprised me about the flyover - why does it favour the A127 instead of the A12?
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?

Southend was a more important destination being a holiday resort, as well as Basildon being that way.

1979 Gubbins Lane/Gooshays Drive Junction. Apparently this junction was realigned; it used to be staggered.

Note the 40 limit, one of the few places where the limit increased. Indicative perhaps of it being single carriageway but it looks dual at least for a bit here?
On the opposite end of the spectrum, an NSL limit for gallows corner at the end of Straight Road!. 1971 https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nS-3Q_ ... sp=sharing
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1npkg9R ... sp=sharing 1972 A127 approaching Gallows Corner A12. Interesting to see how Harwich is in brackets and it is simply "London" as opposed to "Central London".

A completion date of September 1984 is given for a 2 mile D2 A12 Gallows Corner scheme in the DoT's National Roads England 1985 report.
Maybe the Gubbins Lane/Gooshays Drive dual carriageway was a previous safety scheme for the junction?

The 1970 OS One Inch definitely shows a kink in Gooshays Drive approaching the junction, seemingly added artificially when it was upgraded from an access track to the main spine road for the housing estate. By that point it must have been assumed the gap in the DC would be filled eventually and so improvements to the junction probably would have been designed to accommodate a bigger scheme.

Re: When was the A12 dualled between Gallows Corner and the M25?
I can't see any sign of a DC there just the alignment of gooshays and gubbins is staggeredMapper89062 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 02, 2024 18:48 The 1970 OS One Inch definitely shows a kink in Gooshays Drive approaching the junction, seemingly added artificially when it was upgraded from an access track to the main spine road for the housing estate. EDIT: but in the maps before it doesn't look staggered...and it's not today. odd
Re: When was the A12 dualled between Gallows Corner and the M25?
That will be because the A12 doesn't go to Harwich. Brackets denoted a change of road number before you got there.
Re: When was the A12 dualled between Gallows Corner and the M25?
Yes but today they don't have brackets. Harwich is signposted as early as chadwell heath I think.
Re: When was the A12 dualled between Gallows Corner and the M25?
They weren't supposed to be used for destinations on ADS - only numbers. Brackets around destinations should have been used for route confirmation signs.
