Tees Newport Bridge Approach Road reconstruction date

The original dual carriageway section from Norton Road (east of Norton Interchange) to Haverton Hill Road, south of Billingham (current Portrack Interchange) was shown on the 1938 OS Six inch map. The 1939 OS 25 inch map shows the dual carriageway.

It is now D3. Can anyone help with the date of reconstruction?

Teesside Diversion: Stage 1 to the south opened in 1975. Billingham and Wolviston Diversion opened in 1982. The Policy for Roads in England: 1983 Report stated that the latter was 4 miles which would only take it down as far as Norton Interchange from the north of Wolviston start.

The major realignment took place when they were building the new A19 Tees Flyover in 1976 , I can point you to some photos here, note the lack of serious safety features , hard hats, high vis etc.

Prior to that the route of the A19 was along what is now the A135 via Eaglescliffe, Thornaby, down Stockton High Street to Wolviston. To get to Middlesbrough we had to use the Newport Bridge (A1032) to the Newport Roundabout here which was horrible and 'fixed' the same way as the Black Cat, by making the roundabout bigger.

For later work see the new bypass built in 1982 as the old route had become seriously overloaded. It was only around 2021 when Norton to Wolviston was widened.

i dont know anything about the original works but the road around here definitely need reconstructing again they're really bad

Thanks for your help, Keith. The CIHT document gives a date of 1998 for the Norton to Parkway widening.

That'll be right for Norton to Portrack Lane, with the bit from the A66 to the A174 done at the same time. The bit from Norton to the A689 was 2021 like Keith said.

It's a very well built road and arguably the best road in the North East imo, much better than the botch jobs all around Newcastle.
