Folkestone signing mess and Primary Route confusion

Post by roadphotos »

The A2034 (Cherry Garden Avenue) in Folkestone is a Primary Route according to Kent County Council. They say that the A259 is a Primary Route through Folkestone as far as the roundabout next to Folkestone Central Station but from there the Primary Route turns left along the A2034 (Cheriton Road) and then turns right along Cherry Garden Avenue (the A2034) to meet the M20 at Junction 13. Most maps show the A259 as the Primary Route going all the way through Folkestone to the M20 at Junction 13 even though the A2034 is the shorter route. Only the OS show the A2034 as the Primary Route, also the A259 has green signs and the A2034 has white signs so one would assume that the A259 is the only Primary Route through Folkestone, however Kent County Council insist that the A2034 is a Primary Route and that it is in fact the signs that are incorrect. They say that they only intend to replace the signs when the funds become available which probably means no time soon. To confuse things even more the A2034 towards Folkestone is signed as the A20 (Non Primary) on all signs at the M20 (Junction 13) which is clearly wrong and the B2064 is also signed as the A20 at the M20 (Junction 12). I believe the Wiki shows the A2034 as Non Primary which may be incorrect, does anyone have anymore information on this ?

What Kent County Council says and what the signs show are quite different, the signs suggest its secondary and non primary, it lost the primary status when the Folkestone bypass was built. Prior to that the M20 being completed I recall heading north on Cherry Garden Avenue then picking up the A259 Churchill Avenue to the A260 , up Dover Hill and through Capel Le Ferne ending up here.

KCC have no idea whether some roads are primary or not, like the A2042 here or the A264 and A228. Part of the A228 used to be the B2015 so older patched signs like this can be forgiven.

HE aren't much better, apparently the A21 here isn't primary, and up until recently the A2260 here was part of the A2.
