Very true, also the HQDC on the topic rules both out! M8 is not only 50 but a motorway and the A3 high quality….. certainly not!

Re: Towns with an HQDC through the middle
You don't really notice the A5 at all when you're actually in MK unless you're crossing over/under it at one of the four grade separated junctions. It is well landscaped, you can't obviously hear it any more than the grid roads, and it has a large number of crossings for pedestrians. I once for a laugh on a long run decided to see how many times I could cross it - I managed 12!

The A4 through Keynsham probably qualifies. It's entirely NSL except on the approaches to the roundabouts, and although it does come to roundabouts at either end, it gets most of the way across the town without stopping, and does genuinely split the town in two, albeit not evenly.

It's 50 mind, so ruled out.

A40 Monmouth has traffic signals at the Chepstow bridge if I'm not mistaken ?
Re: Towns with an HQDC through the middle
I'm not local, but I suspect Ashford has just grown so that some of it, including the hospital, is on the other side of the M20. Including some villages that have nearly been absorbed.Ritchie333 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 14:29The majority of Ashford is south of the M20 and the majority of Canterbury is north of the A2. Thanington is a small suburb. Herne Bay is entirely north of Thanet Way.AnOrdinarySABREUser wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 14:16 The M20 through Ashford, A2 through Thanington and A299 through Herne Bay are good examples of HQDCs running through the middles of towns.
Re: Towns with an HQDC through the middle
I presume the roundabout on the A1 and the reduced speed limits rule out Sandy for this? Although the vast majority of the residences lie to the east of the road.

What about the A38 through Plymouth? The last time I checked it was NSL.

It's been mentioned upthread.AnOrdinarySABREUser wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 18:43 What about the A38 through Plymouth? The last time I checked it was NSL.

Middlesbrough has the A19 between the A174 Parkway and Portrack.
There is also the A66 which of somewhat lower quality and has a 50 mph limit mainly down the number of intersections and short slip roads.
Along the southern edge we also have the A174 which acts as a southern bypass.

Apart from the residences with direct access to the A1.

The A1 at Sandy was sub standard in the 1980's when the plan was to extend the A1(M) from J10 to a new junction north of Buckden, the scheme was cancelled in 1994 as I recall.

A82 Fort William. Yes, it slices the town from the seaside, but if feels like it's cutting through the centre. It certainly feels more so than the A9 through Stirling.
With both of them, though, I wouldn't call it a HQDC, as they don't have a "mini hard shoulder".

Re: Towns with an HQDC through the middle
Correct. And it also has a roundabout where eastbound traffic on the A40 wanting to turn right onto the A466 at the traffic lights has to pass this junction where no right turns are allowed to then turn and approach the junction and turn left whilst heading west.

Angers (in France) is a foreign place that comes to mind.
A45 in Northampton?

If Fort William is a coastal town then I would say it counts.jgharston wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 20:10 A82 Fort William. Yes, it slices the town from the seaside, but if feels like it's cutting through the centre. It certainly feels more so than the A9 through Stirling.

Roundabouts, traffic lights, and a max of 40! 3 minutes in here:jgharston wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 20:10 A82 Fort William. Yes, it slices the town from the seaside, but if feels like it's cutting through the centre. It certainly feels more so than the A9 through Stirling.

What about Hatfield - a fair amount of the town lies to the west of the A1(M).
Re: Towns with an HQDC through the middle
Is the A690 through Houghton-le-Spring NSL? That always seemed a fairly brutal bit of road building.
