Finavon Bridge, A90, Angus

Post by Ross Spur »

I've set up the page at https://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/ind ... von_Bridge

The information I have is about the 1969 built bridge. If anyone can fill in the details of the previous bridge which was upstream, or the current dual carriageway bridge then this will be appreciated.

From the SABRE Wiki: Finavon Bridge :

Finavon Bridge carries the A90 across the River South Esk between Forfar and Brechin in Angus. It is actually two parallel structures carrying the dual carriageway across the river. The northbound carriageway is a three span concrete structure with slender piers in the river bed, while the south bound structure is a single span girder crossing without any intermediate piers. Both structures have concrete abutments and decks carrying two lanes of traffic between pavements and

Sorry I have no info on the old bridge.

Streetview shows the new bridge with a separate deck for each carriageway so presumably the second deck was built at the time of the later dualling. There is a plaque that can be read and refers to the original opening date.

Landranger 54 edition A, revised 1984, major roads revised 1986, shows the new alignment in use as single carriageway. There is no more trace of the old bridge than on today's maps.

The present A90 is shown as A929 from Dundee to Forfar, then A94 to the edge of the map at Brechin and its standard is shown as follows:

Single carriageway from Dundee to Fintry, northing [7]33.8

Dual to South Tarbrax, northing [7]41.3

Single to near Mains of Caraston, easting [3]54.0

Dual to near West Kintrochat, easting [3]56.3

Single for about 1km to edge of map

Forfar bypass under construction, no detailed representation of standard or junctions.

There's a photo of the old bridge here https://tour-scotland-photographs.blogs ... nt-at.html.
Google also found me an aerial photo from 1967 of the old road alignment, with the bridge on the edge of the picture, and this piece of information about the dualling https://www.finavoncastlefishing.co.uk/ ... -pool.html

That road roller accident looks nasty, particularly for the driver. Must have been difficult to remove the roller from the river.
