On 3 Feb 2018, this project that was intended to extend our OSGB One Inch Seventh Series coverage to offer freely available georeferenced coverage of every single standard coloured sheet in the series that was ever produced and released to the public; showing Great Britain through the changes between 1952 and 1974; the coming of the motorways; the devastation of the railway network under Beeching et al.; and the growth of our towns and cities during that period.

Today the final big batch of sheets has been uploaded to the 1952 One Inch map layer, making the earliest sheets in the series finally available, and confirming SABRE Maps as the largest online repository of Seventh Series sheets anywhere in the world. And yes, that includes the NLS...

So now we're just left with four individual sheets to find - do you have copies of them that we could have scans of to complete the entire collection?

I agree, it is an amazing achievement. I've been keeping an eye out for the missing sheets in various charity shops as I travel around the country, but I've not managed to find any missing ones in that series for some time now, as we near completion of the set.

It's an incredible achievement - but as you say one that few seem to appreciate, which is a bit bizarre for a society supposedly interested in the history of the roads network but there you go!

As you may be aware, not every sheet area was revised on an annual basis. There can be several years gap between revisions in some areas. This makes it harder to do map searches when you’re moving between sheets.

For example, looking around Lichfield/Tamworth/Sutton Coldfield, you notice that the 1973 map runs out, and the nearest available sheet to the east was only from 1967. So you lose the consistency of how far improvements had been built up to then.

It was fixed (sort of), by having a composite for the Seventh Series layer (which is anywhere between 1957-63). Are there any plans to relabel that (eg. as ‘1950s’), and then build another layer as ‘1960s’, or ‘1970s’ when maps and scans become available??

Finally, is the project going to continue into the Landranger era?? Would you want to scan maps up to, say, 1980 when they come available??

We can do something with full composite layers, yes, but time and storage costs are not our friends here.

However, almost every single map is already available - there's only three sheets from the main series (and the pilot series) missing; hence there's not going to be too many more maps available, and certainly none from the period you mention. The status of every sheet in the Seventh Series with regard to it being on SABRE Maps is listed here.

In addition, the gaps can be filled elsewhere. There's the annual Quarter Inch layers on SABRE Maps too, so the area you mention is covered by Sheet 13 (The Midlands), for which there are quite a number in the timeframe you mention, from 1967, 1968, 1970, 1971 and 1972. They're not as detailed but they do cover anything major; and then of course there's the annual Route Planning Maps for overviews that are also on there.

As for the Landranger question - yes!. We're in the stage of gathering sheets together to work out what we can do, because we're not allowed to publish any coverage until they start to drop out of copyright on 1 January 2025. We will then need to be careful to only publish sheets that comply with copyright laws - so 1980 sheets will only be available in 2031.

And one more thing - I'm hoping that with some help to get the maps georeferenced and some donations towards the hosting costs, we'll also be able to bring 1:25k sheets to SABRE Maps. We have over 4000 sheets that are available to us, but it can't happen without that help. More details will be coming soon I hope!

An interesting error on the 1960 one-inch map, which as far as I know was the first year dual carriageways were distinguished from single. Between Chiswick and Hamnmersmith the old A4, Chiswick High Road, is shown as dual, and the new A4, Great West Road, as single.
