Administrative area

In Great Britain, an administrative area in relation to the placement of traffic signs is defined under Schedule 1 of the Traffic Signs Regulations 2016 as:

  • (a) an area that at the time of the placing of the sign in question is—
(i) a county or district in England for the purposes of the Local Government Act 1972;
(ii) a county or county borough in Wales for the purposes of the Local Government Act 1972;
(iii) a local government area for the purposes of the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994; or
(iv) a London Borough;
  • (b) the Isles of Scilly;
  • (c) an area that, at the time of the placing of the sign in question, had been, but is no longer, an area of local government administration (for the purposes of the 1972 or 1994 Act or otherwise); or
  • (d) in relation to—
(i) England and Wales, a county (including the City of London); or
(ii) Scotland, an area,
for the purposes of the Lieutenancies Act 1997.
