Gowkley Moss Roundabout is a very large roundabout junction on the A701 near Roslin between Penicuik and Edinburgh. It provides access to Edinburgh University's veterinary school, a science park, and to the east along the B7003 to the historic town of Roslin (best known for the differently-spelt Rosslyn Chapel). The A701, with double bends on either side of the junction, runs north-south, but actually approaches from the north west and south west. The B7003 then heads east, while Bush Loan Road heads west into the science park, with access to the old stubs of the A701.
The roundabout was built in 2002, and it appears that it was intended to be the southern end of a new bypass for Bilston, possibly to be constructed as a dual carriageway. A deviating pavement on the northern side of the roundabout shows the proposed line of the route which would have roughly followed the old railway line north. The construction of the Asda Store in 2011 seems to have blocked an easy tie in to the existing dual carriageway at Straiton to the north. Different proposals to relieve traffic congestion in the area have now been put forward and appear to involve using the existing A703 route to divert A701 traffic between Straiton and Gowkley Moss, with the mainline of the proposed new road continuing across to the A702.
