Winchburgh Junction is a dumbbell junction on the M9. It is numbered Junction 1B, and has been provided to facilitate additional development, serving no real strategic purpose. The nearby village of Winchburgh is currently growing with the addition of substantial areas of new housing, and is clearly seen as being a new dormitory village for commuters to Edinburgh and further afield. Plans are also progressing to reopen / replace the old railway station, all with the intention of improving connections to the main transport corridors and so support the developments. Roundabouts were added to the B8020 either side of the motorway, with the northern approach realigned at a lower level and full access sliproads then built to connect to the M9. The junction still uses the original bridge over the B8020 which was constructed with the motorway.
Legislation for the new special roads and side roads came into force in November 2021, and the junction opened in April 2023.
