Out of date route confirmation signs

Post by Rillington »

An excellent picture posted to the topic about out of date road signs included a RCS on the old A30 at Summercourt in Cornwall, which had been bypassed over thirty years ago. This got me wondering if there are other similar examples of route confirmation signs on roads, such as in this example of a RCS erected prior to a subsequently bypassing, a road realignment or simply the RCS showing the incorrect road number following a change in road number.

Much further east on the A30 near Micheldever in Hants is this one which has been mentioned on the forum a few times and for which I have a kind of fondness as it reminds me of my Dad going this way in the late 60s on family holidays to Weymouth. It's probably some sort of replacement as there's no road number on it but it still seems quite old and it's good to see it still there on GSV in 2023.

I don't think it's there any more but I loved the one on the B1318 in Gosforth (the old A1) that was the early dark shade of green with a mileage to Edinburgh (possibly 114?) on it on a town's high street. Was there when I was at university in the late 90s!

A photo of this does exist on the Wiki - equally, on Streetview as late as 2009 you had this beauty: https://maps.app.goo.gl/9zUiTmoJ4ySxjHoZ7

The unclassified former A34 leaving Alderley Edge, bypassed for about 13 years now.

There was another one on the A34 just south of there which had M63 long after it became M60. I took this in 2004 but it had gone before the earliest streetview image was taken.

There's this one on the A4060/A470 junction. The Merthyr bypass has been open for at least a couple of decades at this point, yet Merthyr CBC isn't really fussed about removing the old A470 signage from the old route

Sign looking a bit dilapitated, but the old A1(NI) still RCSs itself as such https://www.google.com/maps/@54.1135274 ... ?entry=ttu

Mentioned in the other thread about old A487 signs still present at Caernarfon, here's an outdated RCS with now incorrect road number.

Should show "M73 (M80)" instead of "M73 (A80)"

All other things being equal, signs on bypassed roads tend to be left in place unless you can no longer reach the destinations named by following the sign. They are also in the habit of being replaced like for like when they finally become life-expired because staff don’t check whether the road number or primary status shown is correct.

That makes sense as often the only incorrect information is the road number.

There's a sign on the R132 out of Dublin that still says N1, despite the road being downgraded in 2012. To be fair, I don't think anyone other than the government and road enthusiasts actually call this the R132!

My travelled roads can be found here.

From the SABRE Wiki: R132 :

The R132 follows the former route of the N1 from Parnell Street in Dublin to the border with Northern Ireland at Carrickcarnan in County Louth, where it terminates at an end-on junction with the eastern B113.

O'Connell Street itself was part of the N1, but is now unclassified. The
