Victoria Bridge in Ayr carries the dualled A79 across the River Ayr to the east of the town centre. It is probably the busiest road bridge across the river in the town (there are only two), with this part of the A79 forming the town centre relief road. The bridge was opened as part of this new road in 1961, crossing the river a between the railway bridge and a weir. As originally built, it was a three span steel girder structure carrying a single carriageway road. However, it was widened to take the dual carriageway in 1977 to further combat congestion in the town centre area. The two carriageways are marked out with turning lanes for the junctions on either bank, and run between wide pavements. Metal railings form the parapets, terminated at each corner by stone piers, each of which seems to have been built to match pre-existing walls beyond the bridge.
