WS2 is a wider than usual two lane single carriageway road (S2). This may be a result of traditional road layout, but is also common for newer roads where a D2 is deemed unnecessary or impractical. A road can generally be described as WS2 where it allows for three vehicles (i.e. two vehicles travelling in opposite directions to the left hand side of their carriageway and a central overtaking vehicle straddling the carriageways) to comfortably pass. It is a development of the S3 format of road which has become unpopular with planners due to safety concerns.
