Introduction
Like most road trip addicts, the distance covered in a day is often limited by the people you are travelling with, so like most addicts, given the chance of making tracks with someone who doesn't need to stop every hour is an opportunity not to be missed.
Day One - Sheffield to Loch Tay via the A7
- A57 / M1 / M18 / M62 / A614 / B1228 / A63 / A19 to York (pick up Ritchie)
- A19 to Thirsk
- A168 / A1 to Scotch Corner
- A66 to Penrith
- M6 to J44
- A7 through Hawick, Selkirk and Galashiels to Sheriffhall Roundabout
- A720 / M8 / M9 and spur to the Forth Road Bridge
- A90 / M90 / A827 (M) "because it is there"
- A985 / A876 over Kincardine Bridge
- M876 / M9 to Stirling
- A84 to Lochearnhead
- A85 / A827 to Grandtully
374 miles in just over 9 hours
Day Two - Loch Tay to Plockton via Wester Ross and Bealach na ba
- A827 to A9 near Pitlochry
- A9 up in Inverness and over Kessock Bridge onto the Black Isle
- A835 towards Ullapool
- A832 (northern end) around Wester Ross to Kinlochewe
- A896 to Shieldaig
- Coastal road to Applecross
- Stop for a pint in Applecross, then over the Bealach na Ba. Brakes were tried.
- A896 / A890 to Stromeferry
- Local roads to Plockton

Day Three - Plockton to Sheffield via Skye and the A86
- Local roads (including original routing of A87 via Erbusaig) to Kyle of Lochalsh
- Over the Skye Bridge and up the A87. Divert off at Loch Airnort to take the original coastal route full of potholes
- Back on the A87 to Portree
- A855 to Uig
- A87 again to Kensaleyre
- B8036 / A850 to Dunvegan
- A863 / A87 / A82 / A86 / A889 / A9 / M9 / M80 / A80 (slowly due to roadworks) / M73 / M74 / A74(M) / M6 / A66 / A1 / A59 back to York
- A59 / A1237 / A64 / A1(M) / M18 / M1 / A57 back to Sheffield
