Cotes is the northern junction between the A90 and the A952 south of Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire. It is a TOTSO fork junction providing priority to traffic continuing south from the A90 onto the A952, reflecting the fact that this was originally the line of the A92. The left turn onto the A90 has a long slip lane, while all other movements are provided by two tightly curled links in the apex of the junction. Almost, but not quite opposite these on the A90 lies a further junction with a minor road heading east to Inverallochy on the coast.
Both the A90 and A952 ultimately meet again at Toll of Birness. Originally the direct route was the A92 with the A952 taking the route via Peterhead. However, when the A90 was extended north in the early 1990s, it took the former A952 route, while the detached section of A92 was renumbered as the A952. This route is now neither trunk nor primary, but is still signed as the direct route between Fraserbugh and Aberdeen, and as such carries a lot of HGV traffic.
