Maplin Airport was a proposed major airport and container port from the 1960s, built on reclaimed land at Maplin Sands beyond Southend. Due to the cost, it wasn't built, and Stansted Airport and Felixstowe were developed instead.
Was to have high capacity road and rail links to London - perhaps 2 motorways and 2 four-track railways, such was the size of the development planned. There was definitely going to be one motorway, and depending on the line it was M12 or M13 (which was to pass south of Southend).
