Southend Airport is an airport north of Southend-on-Sea. It was unsuccessfully proposed as a Primary Destination in 2011.
Having had its traffic removed by Stansted Airport in the 1970s, the airport has had several attempts to reverse its fortunes, the most recent beginning in 2008. It is currently the 23rd busiest airport in the UK, which was why it was rejected as a Primary Destination. Nevertheless, plane symbols have been signed by Essex Council alongside Southend in recent years (eg at Sadlers Farm). The A1159 was extended to the airport along a new-build link road in the early 2000s.
