Southfield Roundabout is the junction between the B921 and B969 in Glenrothes. Both routes were intended to be full expressways, or freeways as Glenrothes Development Corporation referred to them. The B921 managed to come much closer than the B969 to achieving this, as it was built as a dual carriageway. The junction was built with space for a flyover to be added at a later date which never happened. The large central island of the roundabout is fully wooded, disguising a large mound which would have carried the flyover. Similar wooded mounds exist in the triangular islands between the two carriageways of the B921 on either side. In contrast, the islands on the B969 and the dualled Whitworth Road to the south are smaller and grassed.

History

The early proposals for this junction name it as Finglassie Interchange and the drawing shows it with a subtly different shape on a slightly different alignment. Such things are not unknown between initial design and final construction, however the drawing also shows that the B921 was intended to pass under the roundabout, while the final design as built clearly allowed for the B921 to be carried over the roundabout. The final notable difference between the early drawing and the junction as constructed is that the B969 was intended to be dualled to the north. This is not a suprise as it was intended to be a major distributor route around the town. However, while the width for a dual carriageway has been preserved to the north, the bridge carrying Viewfield across the B969 to the north does not appear to be wide enough to accommodate a second carriageway, and the B969 is in a fairly deep cutting at this point, which is also not much wider than the road.
