Catter Burn Bridge is a rather insignificant little bridge over a small burn in the village of Croftamie. However, for a number of years it has caused problems, and eventually a long diversion for drivers when the bridge had to be closed.
The bridge itself is a single stone arch across the burn, built in the local red sandstone, with minimal decoration apart from terminal piers on the parapet / flanking walls. However, as it is a small bridge hidden by vegetation on the river bank, there seems little need for a fancy bridge at the location. Due to the curvature of the Catter Burn, the bridge has a long flanking wall on the north east side above the stream below. The general style of the bridge suggests it was constructed in the second half of the 19th Century, but the bridge isn't listed, and there don't appear to be any records of when it was built, or by who.
The local council obviously had some concerns over the bridge, as there were temporary barriers in place in 2020 to restrict the bridge to single running, with priority leaving the village. However, in late September 2021 the north east parapet collapsed, taking part of the pavement with it. This led to the full closure of the bridge, including to pedestrians, and a lengthy diversion via the A81 and A811. By Spring 2022, Stirling Council had finalised surveys and plans for reconstruction of the failed side of the bridge were in place.
