Diamond Bridge was built in 2016 as the 'Third Don Crossing', designed to reduce the pressure on the very busy Bridge of Don to the east and Persley Bridge to the west. It comprises a substantial shallow arched steel structure which spans from either bank, supporting a concrete deck. The steelwork allows riverside paths to pass under the bridge on each riverbank, presumably also used by floodwaters when the river is in spate. The deck carries a wide two lane carriageway with pavements on either side between metal barriers as parapets. The pavement on the downstream side is considerably wider as it is also designated as a cycle track. Behind the railings, street light columns are supported on tiny concrete deck projections.
The bridge was named by local school children in a competition and opened on 9th June 2016. For the first few years the road was unclassified, however it became part of the new B988 in 2020 when the city council carried out a review of road numbering.
