John Smeaton was an engineer born in Leeds. He was perhaps best known for his work on canals and harbours, but he also produced a large number of bridge designs during his working life, and not just across canals.

In 2008, a newly constucted viaduct carrying the A61 across the River Aire in Leeds was named after him[1].
