North Somerset Council as Highway Authority, has overall responsibility for highway and traffic matters, with the exception of Trunk roads managed by Highways England, in the whole of North Somerset Unitary Authority, which is the north west corner of the historic county of Somerset.
The council is headquartered in Weston-super-Mare, the largest town in the council area, but has offices in all of the main urban areas, with the Highways department having had offices in Clevedon and Nailsea as well as Weston.
The Council area was part of the former and ill-loved Administrative County of Avon, and as such still works with its neighbours Bath & NE Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire in a number of areas, including some relating to roads.
