The R742 is a "long way round" of a "long way round", in as much as it provides an alternative link between just north of Wexford and Gorey to the R741, which in turn provides an alternative to the N11.
It starts just north of Wexford Harbour Bridge and heads east to Curracloe, before turning north towards Blackwater and the Wexford coast. After hugging the coastline at Riverchapel, it heads back inland to the R772 (the old N11) in Gorey town centre.
