Stanley Bridge is where the A65 crosses the River Lune in Kirkby Lonsdale. This major route runs between Leeds and Kendal.
History
The bridge, which was built for Westmorland County Council at a cost of £20,000, was a replacement for the medieval Devil's Bridge and was part of the Kirkby Lonsdale bypass scheme. 60 men worked on the scheme. The new bridge and bypass was opened on 3 December 1932. The bridge was opened by Oliver Stanley, Minister for Home Affairs and the bypass by Lady Bentinck of Underley Hall.
