Ollerton Roundabout is a busy roundabout junction just to the west of the town of the same name. There are a total of 5 arms, all of them A-roads, at the roundabout, and all three routes cross at Ollerton, the A6075 re-appearing after a short multiplex with the A616 into the town.

The main route through the junction is the north-south A614, which diverges from the A1 7 miles to the north and is the Primary route south into Nottingham. It is therefore an important strategic route between Nottingham and Doncaster, as well as many other points. The A616 and A6075 are less important routes, but still busy, crossing from west to east through the junction. The A616 has come south east from Sheffield and continues through to Newark, while the A6075 is a more local route, running north east from Mansfield to meet the A57 heading for Lincoln. As can be seen, each arm of this roundabout junction connects with a sizeable urban centre, and while there are alternative routes available via the M1, A1 and A46 dual carriageways, these are longer and not necessarily quicker. A lot of local traffic undoubtedly also passes through Ollerton Roundabout.

In addition to all of the traffic passing through the junction, the roundabout has also become a destination in itself, with a MacDonalds, Costa, Shell, Esso and Marstons Inn filling three of the 6 'corners' of the junction. These services are all separately accessed, a short distance away from the main roundabout, which adds to the traffic flows at the junction.

As noted above, the roundabout is almost a six-arm junction, and indeed historically it was. Just before the eastern arm of the A616 reaches the roundabout, Newark Road, the former line of the A616, meets the road, albeit with no entry, so traffic from Ollerton has to give way twice in quick succession to join the roundabout.

History

The line of the A614 is the only route which has remained unchanged in the last seventy years, although originally even that took a different line to the south. Back in 1922, the A614 and A616 from the north met as they still do at the junction. The current A6075 to the south west was then the B6033, while all three routes then multiplexed across the Rainworth Water into Ollerton Village on Newark Road. By the 1950s, the junction had become a 'sixways', with Newark Road now solely carrying the A616. The A614 has been moved onto its current line, while the new approach from the north east carries the A611, which formerly passed through Ollerton, before being truncated and this part of the route being taken over by the A6075. The bypassed sections of the routes through Ollerton are now the B6461.

Future

In autumn 2020, plans were revealed to improve the roundabout by enlarging the central island, and the circulatory lanes. Newark Road would also be realigned to meet the A616 further away from the roundabout itself.
