Portencross Crossroads lies on the A78 at the point where the B7048 crosses to the west of West Kilbride. The A78 naturally bypasses most of this small town, which climbs the hillside above the Ayrshire coast, with four separate B roads connecting the town centre to the main road. Bizzarely, perhaps, it is the western arm of the B7048 that is often the busier route, as it heads west along the coast to a busy car park at Portencross, which offers walks along the beach and further afield as part of the Ayrshire coast path. The junction, however, is a very simple crossroads, and the Portencross road quickly becomes almost single track as it follows a long straight.
