Opened in 2005, Chapelhill Roundabout is one of three new junctions constructed as part of the Three Towns Bypass. This saw the A78 moved out of the towns of Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston onto a new route curving around the urban fringe. To the east of the junction, the A78 is dualled, indeed the remainder of the route from here to its terminus on the A77 near Prestwick is all dual carriageway, punctuated at regular intervals with roundabouts. However, to the west the A78 is S2+1, traffic flows clearly considered to be insufficient for the construction of an extra kilometre of tarmac. The extra lane is eastbound, and perhaps relates to a periodic flow of traffic disembarking from the Arran Ferry, whereas the outbound traffic arrives over a longer period of time.
The roundabout is situated where the bypass crosses the B780 from Dalry. It is therefore a simple 4-arm junction, with the A78 running roughly east-west and the B road north-south. Ardrossan town is signed down the B780, but ferry traffic is directed along the bypass to the coast, and then back into Ardrossan on the A738. However, as the B road is the shorter route, most regular traffic presumably follows it, thus perhaps rendering the extra lane on the bypass less useful than it could be.
