This SABRE Maps Coverage Project is to provide online coverage of the OS One Inch Popular Edition of England and Wales and associated maps such as the Tourist and District sheets. Scottish sheets were numbered and treated separately, and so they have their own Coverage Project, and are not covered here.

The Popular Edition of England and Wales were created just after World War 1, and continued throughout the inter-war period, with the final sheets being printed at the outbreak of World War 2.

The Popular Edition is useful for us to have as it shows mapping at a relatively detailed scale during the inter-war period. However, the mapping series does not show road numbers although "A" roads were marked (but without numbers) from 1935. Instead, the OS argued before that time that the Popular Edition mapping focussed on the physical layout, and so road width was the determining factor in deciding how to depict roads.

Which projection type are these maps?

The Popular Edition is surrounded by an alphanumeric grid similar to this MoT map rather than any form of co-ordinate system

OS One Inch Popular Edition maps use the Cassini (Delamere) projection throughout and should be georeferenced accordingly.

The corner co-ordinates for georeferencing purposes can be found on the main Popular Edition information article. As the Popular Edition pre-dates both the OSGB National Grid and the previous National Yard Grid; no standard co-ordinate system is printed on the maps themselves and instead the maps are surrounded by a simple alphanumeric grid, with the gridlines set at a usual interval of two miles apart. though

How do I find out the date of the map?

From 1922 to 1935, Popular Edition maps have revision codes that look like this Fifth Edition example, 9200/31 in this example, which dates the map to 1931
Post-1935 revision codes look similar to this Fifth Edition example, 3035 in this example, dating the map to 1935

Annoyingly, the OS didn't usually put the exact date of the map on each map. Often, the date that appears on the map (usually with the words First published by the Director General at the Ordnance Survey Office) often is not the correct date of the map, but the date of the first revision of the map. Annoyingly, even where a seemingly obvious date is visible (such as "Roads 1946"), that does not tell the full story. For that, we need to capture the actual revision code found on the map.

Revision codes on Popular Edition sheets can be found in several places:

  • The initial printing of each sheet, somewhat confusingly, does not have any revision code on them.
  • The earliest revised maps have a simple month.date code, usually at the bottom left of the key area, for example, 6.21.
  • From about 1922 to 1935, print codes were located at the bottom right within the text block and are of a form similar to 2500/26. Confusingly, sometimes revision codes were added to the end of previous ones; for our purposes it is the final code that we are interested in.
  • From 1935 onwards, the revision codes are located right at the bottom left of the map sheet, underneath the margin texts, and is a numeric code such as 2538.

Progress by every sheet ever printed

If two revisions were printed in a single year, then the one nearest to the centre of the year is listed as being from that year, and the other revision shifted into the earlier or later year as appropriate. Only standard civilian colour editions are listed. The table below is modified for SABRE Maps usage from the best source available for dating, Yolande Hodson's Popular Maps: The Ordnance Survey Popular Edition One Inch Map of England and Wales 1919-1926, published by the Charles Close Society. That work should be treated as the primary source, and not this page.
