Seventh Series cover
Final series cover

This SABRE Maps Coverage Project is to provide online coverage of the One Inch Seventh Series and associated maps.

This was the first Ordnance Survey mapping at the One Inch scale to be a single series across the whole of Great Britain, and is useful for us to have as it shows mapping at a relatively detailed scale during the major roadbuilding era of the 1950s and 1960s, with the final Seventh Series maps being produced in 1974. They therefore cover the start of the motorway era, and so are very useful for seeing the development of the network, with many details that were later lost documented in map form.

They were replaced by the OS 1:50,000 series (now known as Landranger), but at the time of writing all Landranger sheets are still within copyright.

The Seventh Series coverage on SABRE Maps focusses on civilian coloured editions, so military editions are avoided where possible and Outline editions are never used. It should be noted that some early revision codes were only printed as Outline editions with unchanged information from the prior coloured edition, and so whilst these are noted in the table below as they have different revision codes, their existence is ignored for all other purposes including coverage information.

Which projection type are these maps?

See Also: SABRE Maps/Calibrating

The OS One Inch Seventh Series uses the OSGB National Grid and should be georeferenced accordingly.

How do I find out the date of the map?

Most Seventh Series have revision codes that look like this, B/* in this example, which dates the map to 1966 rather than the 1962 copyright date
Early Seventh Series revision code, A in this example
See Also: SABRE Maps/OS Copyright

Annoyingly, the OS didn't actually put the exact date of the map on each map. The date that appears on the map (either with the words Crown Copyright or Made and published by the Director General of the Ordnance Survey) often is not the correct date of the map, but the date of the last full revision. Roads are updated every minor revision, so there is every chance that a map may actually be from quite a number of years away from the copyright date. There is an example of the Preston sheet which has a copyright date of 1958, but in actual fact the revision date is 1969, and hence the map shows the entire M6 motorway in the area.

Revision codes on Seventh Series sheets can be found in one of two places. In early Seventh Series maps, they are located right at the bottom left of the map sheet, underneath the sheet number; whilst in most sheets, they are located immediately under the bottom left corner of the maps themselves, between the map and the key.

Revision codes appear in the heading within SABRE Maps, and so this information is extremely valuable to capture.

It also should be noted that the official copyright requirement of Ordnance Survey is that the critical date for copyright purposes is the Crown Copyright date rather than the actual date of the map. This means that some maps less than 50 years old can still appear on SABRE Maps, and not be in breach of copyright.

Progress by every sheet ever printed

This table, with modifications, is taken from Lez Watson's Ordnance Survey Leisure Maps Summary Lists, which is the best online source available for all post-war OS map dating. Modifications for SABRE Maps use include where two revisions were printed in a single year, then the one nearest to the centre of the year is listed as being from that year, and the other revision shifted into the earlier or later year as appropriate. Lez's site should be treated as the master list, not this.

For this table only, the additional grey boxes indicate where revisions were only printed in outline form, and not coloured form. They are effectively reprints of the earlier coloured format, and so we do not need to acquire copies of these.

Notes

  1. Whilst Sheet 78 (Newcastle) Revision A does exist in a coloured version, it is a straight reprint of the outline edition which was then coloured, and identical to Revision 4022 in all other ways.
  2. Revision 4001 of Sheet 142 (Hereford) is the Pilot Sheet for the Seventh Series, and so was not released to the public. The Charles Close Society released a reproduction of this sheet in 2016, but this reproduction is still in copyright and therefore cannot be used without permission.
